Susie Concelmo

Real Estate Representative

Partner Since: 11/7/2011

  • What development feedback were you given to prepare you for your promotion to your current role?
    • When I planned to develop into real estate, I integrated gaining a deeper understanding of real estate into my PDP and had regular conversations with my managers, updating my PDP and adding actions taken/next steps to my plan inclusive of involvement in real estate team special meetings, conferences, internal tools/processes, meeting with real estate and cross-functional partners, internal real estate calls & practical application of the tools the real estate team uses. This helped me tremendously to prepare for the role in case an opportunity opened up.
  • What advice would you give to a partner about their development if they wish to be promoted from the role you previously held to your current role?
    • Connect with those in the role and those who manage partners in the role to find out what skills you need to be prepared for the role. From there, set weekly, monthly & quarterly goals directed towards learning those skills & bridging any gaps in your current
  • How did you learn about the availability of the open role before you were promoted?
    • I learned about this role through a peer I had in my store that took the same developmental course I did. I watched her go from Barista to ASM in the time we worked together, and she showed me a lot of what her process looked like. After she was placed into her own store, she helped me look for the open position so that I could move up as well!

  • What advice would you give to a partner about their development if they wish to be promoted from the role you previously held to your current role?
    • The biggest piece of advice I have is to stay confident and be willing to make improvements. No one is good at something right off the bat, and it's ok to make mistakes as long as you are learning and growing from those mistakes. Let your peers coach you, and don't be afraid to take risks!

  • How has the promotion to your current role changed/impacted your life?
    • I've been impacted in and outside of Starbucks through this role, as it has shown me the difference that I can make on the people around me. My personal expression, my work ethic, and my attention to detail have all improved greatly. Starbucks has also shown me exactly what I am capable of when I put my all into the things that I do.

  • What do you love about your current role?
    • I love working with other people, specifically on helping them with their personal development. I love exploring people's potential, showing them what they are capable of, and inspiring them to find their passion in and outside of Starbucks. Being an ASM (and even a shift supervisor) allows me to do that and to grow with the people around me.

  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
    • Hopefully still with Starbucks! I want to continue my development as much as possible so I can grow alongside the company. I have always loved what Starbucks stands for and I want to continue helping the creation of the Third Place for the people in my community. I want to make Starbucks coffee an imperative piece in my communities’ puzzle, hoping to inspire in the ways I was inspired.

skillset. Keep a record of any actions taken towards achieving those goals and connect regularly with partners on that team to review your progress and adjust your goals as needed so that when a role opens, you're prepared.

  • How has the promotion to your current role changed/impacted your life?
    • It allowed me to stretch beyond my comfort zone and continue to challenge myself every day as I gain a deeper understanding of the role. Taking on the new role made me feel as though anything that I truly set my mind and heart to is possible and it allowed me to set an example for my daughter that she can do a job she loves every day. In addition, the new role allows me to better provide for my family and be a better asset to the team.
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
    • Continuing to grow and develop in real estate, hopefully paying it forward by mentoring other partners in the same way that so many partners on our team mentored & supported me & becoming a store development manager.
  • What’s the best advice you’ve been given at Starbucks?
    • When I applied for a position I'd worked towards that I was interested in & didn't receive the position, the hiring managers told me it wasn't no, it just wasn't now. It was the first time that I'd worked extremely hard to be prepared for a role and didn't get it. In the moment, I was devastated, but they let me know that while I grew & developed many skills towards being successful in role, there were still some gaps, but that if I really wanted to pursue that career path, it was possible, but I was going to need to put in the work to continue to grow. They met with me weekly and reviewed my progress towards developing the remaining skills needed and when another opportunity opened up for a TLA in that role, the additional preparation set me up for success in the TLA and was hired on for that position when the TLA was complete.

What is your dream job? I want to be a surgeon who specializes in transgender healthcare.

What inspires you? My past and my challenges inspire me. My past is a form of inspiration to me because I look at it in the right context. Often times people see their past as a bad place, something that weighs them down. But when I see the past, even the parts I don’t like, I use it as a source of inspiration. I’ve had many challenges, but it’s about overcoming them. For me, being challenged and going out of my way to push to the next level is inspiring. I look forward to challenging myself constantly.

What is your best study tip or trick? I never was good at studying. I still struggle a bit with it sometimes. But it’s all repetition for me personally. Rewriting things , but also applying it. So if you can teach someone something then you have a pretty good grasp of the subject. It’s also important to take little breaks, don’t try to jam all the information in your head at once. Study, then take a short break, then study again, and the circle continues.

What is your best tip for balancing school and work? Don’t overwork yourself. I have in the past and I never had time for school I was kinda just winging it because I was always so tired. I loved my job at Starbucks but at a certain point you need to know when you need to make a little more time and space in your life for another area of your life. Now I cut my hours a bit and can really focus more on schoolwork and balancing work, school, and my social life.

What's your dream job? Social Work or in the area of Hospitality management

What do you hope to do after graduation? Apply to master of social work graduate programs

What is your favorite study snack? Cool ranch Dorito's

What is your favorite quote? "When you're fishing, you can catch a lot of fish or you can catch a big fish."

What is your best study tip or trick? ALWAYS find the table nearest to an electrical outlet. Another would be to prioritize and cultivate a productive space!

What is your best tip for balancing school and work?

Draw up a timetable and maintain a consistent schedule by taking

down notes and keeping a reminder of deadlines. It doesn't hurt

to make a weekly to-do list.
